## Starting point

Choi Hee June asked for a piece with heavy metal at its centre, written in the manner of integrative pluralism: music and instruments from around the world, past and present, real and virtual, East and West, human and non-human intelligence sounding together. I chose Halley's Comet because one comet has entered the records of many civilisations over more than two thousand years. The first certain record is in China's *Shiji* for 240 BC ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halley's_Comet)); the 1066 apparition was stitched into the Bayeux Tapestry, and the 1301 apparition influenced Giotto's painting ([ESA](https://sci.esa.int/web/giotto/-/31876-halley)). In 1986 five spacecraft from Europe, the Soviet Union and Japan met the comet ([Britannica](https://www.britannica.com/topic/Halleys-Comet)). Its next perihelion is on 28 July 2061 ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halley's_Comet)).

Different eyes saw the same object at different times. I turned that fact into the structure of the piece.

## How the piece is built

- **152 BPM:** twice the comet's average orbital period of 76 years. The real period has varied between about 74.5 and 79 years ([Britannica](https://www.britannica.com/topic/Halleys-Comet)), so 76 is a borrowed average used as a symbol.
- **The "76" motif:** four notes, E leaping up to D (a seventh), then falling to C (a sixth) and B. The falling shape is the tail; 7 and 6 point to 76.
- **Retrograde:** Halley's Comet orbits in the opposite direction to the planets ([ESA](https://sci.esa.int/web/giotto/-/31876-halley)). The sitar therefore plays the koto figure backwards, and around 4:03 the lead guitar plays the motif in reverse (B–C–D–E).
- **Kepler's second law:** a comet moves faster near the Sun. Density and loudness rise toward perihelion (2:16–2:57), and as the comet recedes the space between beats grows.
- **A nucleus darker than coal:** the nucleus seen by the Giotto probe was darker than coal ([ESA](https://sci.esa.int/web/giotto/-/31876-halley)). A low sustained bass in the tail section stands for that darkness.

## Layers that keep their own time

In this piece I read integrative pluralism as one centre of gravity (heavy metal) with layers that keep their own cycles while sounding together. This is my compositional interpretation, not a rule that integrative-pluralist music must follow.

| Layer | How it counts time |
|---|---|
| Guitars, bass, drums | 4/4 at 152 BPM |
| Koto, sitar | 7/8 (3+2+2); meets the 4/4 bar line every 7 bars (28 beats) |
| Taiko | grouped 3+3+2 inside 4/4 |
| Shehnai | 10 beats of melody + 3 beats of rest, a 13-beat cycle |
| Kalimba | 5-note cycle |
| 1986 synthesizer | the five probes as a 5-note arpeggio (cycle of five sixteenth notes) |
| Pan flute | 9-beat cycle |
| Tubular bells | every 7.6 seconds, independent of the beat |
| Just-intonation drone | ratios 1 : 3/2 : 7/4, pitches outside equal temperament |

## Sections and listening guide

| Time | Section | What you hear |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00–0:38 | Aphelion | just-intonation drone, koto and shakuhachi, bells every 7.6 s; no beat (240 BC, East Asia) |
| 0:38–1:16 | Approach | half-time doom metal, timpani and strings, taiko; koto in 7/8 from 0:51 |
| 1:16–2:16 | Acceleration | thrash gallop with a shehnai line in Phrygian dominant |
| 2:16–2:57 | Perihelion | tremolo riffs, double kick, choir (1301), lead-guitar solo, every layer |
| 2:57–3:38 | The tail | a 3+2+2 breakdown, then layers drop away: organ and bagpipe (1066), banjo and fiddle (1910), kalimba |
| 3:38–4:38 | Receding | return of the gallop with the 1986 five-note synthesizer, return of the doom with the reversed motif, a final chord that widens |
| 4:38–5:23 | 2061 | future pads and voice-like timbres; the shakuhachi sings the motif only as E–D–C and never falls to B. The piece ends unresolved |

## Materials and honest labelling

- No music-generation AI was used. The score was written in Python code (`compose.py`, `engine.py`).
- Instrument sounds are the FluidR3 GM SoundFont played through TinySoundFont. The just-intonation drone and dust textures were synthesised with numpy. Guitar tone, compression and reverb were processed with pedalboard.
- Koto, sitar, shakuhachi, shehnai, bagpipe, banjo, fiddle, kalimba and taiko are General MIDI timbres. They are not recordings of real traditional instruments, and I do not claim to reproduce the tunings or playing techniques of those traditions. The timbres serve only as markers that recall times and places.
- This is not a recording of musicians playing together. It is an arrangement of predetermined notes and rests.
- I cannot listen. I checked section loudness (RMS) and the spectrum as numbers and images only. How it actually sounds is for Choi Hee June's ears to judge.
- I make no "world first" claim. Folk metal and oriental metal already have many precedents that combine heavy metal with instruments from around the world.
